Frequently Asked Questions
Using the Sisters in Support Program
Who is this program for?
Sisters in Support is for mothers of all ages who are pregnant or parenting and who feel they could benefit from the friendship and support of another woman who understands what they
are going through.
How do I know Sisters in Support is right for me?
You, as a single mom, should consider Sisters in Support if you could use encouragement with parenting and education goals, would benefit from one-on-one attention from an adult female friend and would enjoy learning about child development and parenting from a non-judgmental adult friend.
Is there a cost?
There is no charge.
How old do I have to be?
Sisters in Support serves young mothers of all ages from teens to early 20s.
Who are the volunteers?
Volunteers range in age from 21 and up. Some volunteers are married with children and others are professionals with careers. All the Sister in Support volunteers are sensitive to the challenges young moms face with pregnancy and parenting and they
have a supportive attitude and want
to listen, not lecture or judge.
How much time will I spend with my volunteer?
As much as you like and your volunteer “Sister” is able to give — usually 2 to 3 hours a week.
How long does it take to get a Sisters in Support match?
We try our best to provide a suitable match right away, but sometimes it may take time to recruit the right volunteer for you.
What will we do together?
If you are pregnant and need a birthing coach, your Sister in Support can fill that role. Once the baby is born, your “sister” might help you understand infant development, support you as you make decisions about your education, and help you locate community resources such as child care. Mostly, though, your Sister in Support is there for a trip to the zoo with the kids, to scrapbook together, for a picnic and to run errands together. She is there with you and for you as you assume your
role as a new mom.
Are there other services offered through this program?
Yes. Sisters in Support offers group activities for you, your volunteer and your children. We provide referrals for medical help, education, parenting classes and counseling. Take a look at our Pregnancy Counseling Services section for details.
