Special Funds

Kip and Chris Barber Fund
Purpose: To provide funds to support the recruitment, matching and supervision of Big Brothers Big Sisters program matches.

Berghuis Memorial Fund
Purpose: To provide household items for families whose children have been in foster care; to provide camp scholarships, sports equipment, recreational equipment and admission expenses for sports events for children in the care or under the supervision of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s.

Bertsch Fund
Purpose: To provide scholarships, grants, which may include living expense, for vocational and technical career training to disadvantaged clients who have been or are currently receiving services under the auspices of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s.

Jaqua Memorial Fund
Purpose: (1)To Provide special training and instruction for children in the care of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s, and (2) To provide scholarships for the further study and training of employees of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s.

John Koster Memorial Fund
Purpose: To provide for Big Brother Big Sister volunteer recognition, recruitment and retention projects.

Lathrop Recruitment and Training Fund
Purpose: To provide funds for the recruitment and training of adoptive and foster parents so as to enhance the placement opportunities for children who are in the care or under the supervision of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s.

Mr. Mike's Educational Fund
Purpose: To provide funds to help meet the educational needs of students while they are living in one of the residential treatment homes. This may include items such as an intensive reading program, specialized tutoring, books, etc. that are above and beyond the current resources provided by the Academic Support Program.

Samaritan Fund
Purpose: To provide benefits to Foster Care children in the following areas when no other funding source is available such as:
1) Medical and dental needs, psychiatric services, eye exams and glasses, hearing aids, prescriptions, equipment, and medications not covered by Medicaid.
2) Educational needs ranging from tutoring to music lessons, special summer camps, and services to prepare older youth for independent living.
3) To purchase "care bags" containing essential personal hygiene, self-care and clothing items for each child entering foster care.

John P. Steketee Fund
Purpose: To provide financial assistance with school and living-related expenses for youth entering young adulthood and in the care of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s or have been served by D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s, with the goal of helping them get through the first two years of college or other post secondary instruction and training. The instruction and training will be limited to the first two years of courses and study offered for academic credit by the Grand Rapids Community College or other post-secondary colleges and technical or vocational schools.

Steele and Mary Taylor Educational Fund
Purpose: To provide funds for the educational success of youth who have experienced stays in our foster care program. These opportunities may include: tutoring to prepare them to take the ACT test, car insurance assistance for college students to assure transportation to attend college, mentoring focused on college preparation (recruitment, training and stipends to support match), develop materials to explain the availability of these funds to youth, foster and adoptive parents to encourage their excitement about the reality of education completion and success, and to supplement college tuition, books and material expenses for youth attending college successfully.
